Our Mission

FreeYourData Alternatives is a companion project to the FreeYourData Risk Assessment Calculator. Our mission is to provide European organizations and individuals with practical, privacy-friendly alternatives to US-based SaaS and cloud services that may expose their data to foreign surveillance.

Following the invalidation of the Privacy Shield framework by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the Schrems II ruling, European organizations face significant challenges in ensuring their data is properly protected when using US-based services.

How We Assess Services

Each alternative listed on this site is assessed based on several key factors:

• Jurisdiction: Where the service provider is legally headquartered
• Data Storage Location: Where your data is physically stored
• Ownership Structure: Whether the company has US-based parent companies or significant shareholders
• Compliance Measures: Implementation of GDPR, ISO27001, and other relevant standards
• Transparency: Clarity in privacy policies and data handling practices

Based on these factors, we assign a risk level (Low, Medium, or High) to each alternative.

You can then use this resource to find suitable alternatives in those categories.
